Signal Decommissioning Notification

The first steps towards decommissioning of the traffic signal at Fall Hill Avenue and Germania Street were completed on Friday, June 30. Fall Hill Avenue was milled and repaved from Route 1 to Bunker Hill Street and new pavement markings and traffic signs were also installed. Traffic is now controlled by a new stop sign on Germania Street, with traffic on Fall Hill Avenue able to flow without stopping.  The traffic signal was placed into flash mode on June 30 and is flashing red for Germania Street traffic and yellow for Fall Hill Avenue traffic. The signal will remain in flash mode until July 7 and will then be switched off and the signal heads covered. The signal equipment will remain in place until after the start of the new school year at James Monroe High School. Assuming that traffic continues to flow smoothly through the intersection after a 30 day monitoring period, the signals will be removed sometime in October. This is the last of five traffic signals scheduled for decommissioning this year. Signals have already been removed at Hanover Street and Kenmore Avenue, Hanover and Littlepage Streets, William and Littlepage Streets, and Princess Anne and Canal Streets.  A study commissioned in 2016 found that these signals no longer met warrants for signalized intersections, and the savings to the City had these signals been replaced due to their age and condition, is approximately $1.25 million.
