[ARCHIVED] May is Adult Abuse Prevention Month

In recognition of Adult Abuse Prevention Month in Virginia the City of Fredericksburg Department of Social Services protective services unit has collaborated with community partners to increase awareness, to educate, and to raise funds in an effort to prevent adult abuse. There are many forms of adult abuse, including physical and mental abuse, neglect and self-neglect and financial exploitation. Abuse of older adults and individuals with a disability occurs in families and communities of all social, economic and racial backgrounds. The Department’s activities include:

• On May 1, the Department will kick off the month by hanging our “May is Elder Abuse Prevention Month” banner along with purple ribbons on the outside of the DSS building. Employees will be treated in the morning to donuts and goodies on their desk to include purple ribbons for them to wear during the month of May.
• On May 16, the Services unit of our Department will host “A concert, cookies and carnations” event at Hughes Home Assisted Living Facility. This is a social event for the residents at Hughes Home. Department service workers will spend time with the residents serving cookies and handing out purple carnations. There will be a vocal concert by 8 year old music student, Ava Young and vocalist Ashleigh Chevalier. Also in attendance will be Buddy, the therapy dog and his handler Michelle Matthews!!!!
• On May 16, DSS staff will have the opportunity to participate in a FLIP FLOP FRIDAY. Participants contribute $5 to wear flip flops for the day and all proceeds will be given to the Senior Visitors Program. Staff will also be encouraged to Wear Purple this day.
